AmaMagdalena for Colombia

AmaWaterways announces the first ever luxury cruise on the Magdalena River in Colombia

At long last the secret can be told!

AmaWaterways is heading to Colombia to bring the first luxury river cruise to the Magdalena River. This custom-built, all-suite, eco-friendly river cruise ship currently in the design phase will have a zero Carbon Footprint on the environment and is set to host approximately 80 guests. Currently in the design phase and set to start building soon, we expect the first sailings to take place in December of 2023.

Although we don't have specifics yet, anyone that knows me knows I have already requested space for FEBRUARY 2024!! My plan is to include Carnival in Barranquilla! Fingers crossed we get it!

While details are still being developed, Ama will partner with leading South American tour operator Metropolitan Touring, known for their incredible tours of the Galapagos, Ecuador, and Peru. At present, we expect two alternating 7 night itineraries that will allow guests to enjoy Colombia’s cultural and natural heritage. Of course we also expect some stellar pre and post cruise options in further cooperation with Metropolitan, as well.

When asked, "Why Colombia as the next destination?" Ama's owner and president Rudi Schreiner said: “I’m absolutely captivated by the rich history, wildlife and friendly welcome that awaits our guests when our intimate, all-suite ship sets sail in December 2023. The reason for the Magdalena is, I think, it is the prime river in Latin America and it combines culture and nature. It is a perfect destination.”

“It is incredibly exciting to be able to launch a new river cruise destination like Colombia,” said Kristin Karst, executive vice president and co-founder of AmaWaterways.

Asked what kind of river cruise passenger would be interested in booking the sailings, she said: “I believe that anyone who wants to explore the world and wants to see more of our beautiful globe. An active traveller. Age-wise it does not matter if you are eight or 80 years old – you just need to be curious about the world."

“AmaWaterways is celebrating 19 years of creating authentic river cruise experiences in Europe, Asia and Africa and now, with our world-recognised destination partner, Metropolitan Touring, we will be able to offer our guests an opportunity to explore a fourth continent while discovering Colombia along the Magdalena River.”

Each cruise will be hosted by the great AmaWaterways teams we've grown to love in Europe, staffed with local professionals and will also include a wellness manager on-board. River cruise travelers on the Magdalena will enjoy 5 star service and food onboard and in-depth connections with local nature, wildlife, culture, flavors and people, as well as activities such as kayaking, hiking and birdwatching.

You will be amazed at the abundance of natural life and the hundreds of fish species found in the river, as well as other native animals including caiman, iguanas, pelicans, manatees, parakeets, turtles and tortoises. Even hippopotamuses are found in the river—originally brought to Colombia by Pablo Escobar! All of this with Ama's 5 star casual luxury and dedication to both their guests and the environment in which they sail.

I am sure you are as excited as I am about this new destination and based on the requests I am already getting from my very first Facebook and Instagram posts, my hosted trip is sure to sell out fast.

So in order to allow my loyal guests to be among the first to sail this incredible river and ship, I am opening up a waiting list and will offer cabins based on a first come, first served system for my escorted sailing, and will also take names of those who want to organize their own adventure to make sure they get the best possible cabin and offer possible.

I have already begun gathering names on a spreadsheet and will go down the list with cabin offers the MOMENT details are confirmed and my group offers are in place.

In order to make sure you are not left out, I urge you to get on the list!!!
